Editorial

Counselor magazine

Art Director, 2012–2016

I ran each issue from start to finish: cover concepts and design, feature article layouts, directory inserts, and every page through final layout. When a story called for it, I illustrated the cover myself, as with the June 2015 issue on attorneys seeking help for substance abuse (below).

Renew magazine

Spring 2015

When Renew partnered with Health Communications in 2014, I took over layout and design for every issue. This is Spring 2015.

October 2012: cover illustration and design. It won an ASHPE Bronze award for best cover illustration, and it's the cover at the top of this page. June 2015: asked to illustrate the cover for the story on attorneys seeking help. I wanted it fun and true to my illustrative style.

Identity

Spartico

Coconut Grove

A trattoria serving gourmet pizza and Italian food at casual prices. I designed the logo, then carried it through the website, menus, and flyers.

Publishing

When Renew merged with Health Communications, sales needed a kit that showed Counselor, Renew, and US Journal Training as three separate entities working as one.

What I bring

Things that have to be made, not just shown.

  • Print literacy

I build things that have to be made. A pocket mailer with slits for removable inserts, rebuilt from a physical proof, is the kind of job I like.

  • One system, many pieces

A logo is the start. At Spartico it ran through the website, menus, and flyers. At Copperline it ran through cards, letterhead, and envelopes. In the media kit, three brands ran as one.

  • Editorial range

Covers, features, directory inserts, and full issues. I've laid out entire magazines, not just single spreads.

  • Illustration with a point of view

An ASHPE Bronze for cover illustration, and a June 2015 cover that was meant to be fun in a serious issue.

Case in depth — The Brazilian Court

The lost mailer.

The Brazilian Court's original files were gone and they needed a reprint.

  1. 01

    Start from the object

I recreated the document from an actual printed proof.

  2. 02

    Rebuild the structure

The mailer needed a pocket with slits so inserts could be added and removed.

  3. 03

    Make it editable

The brief also asked for changes, so the new file was built to be modified, not just copied.

  4. 04

    Deliver

    Print-ready files for the reprint.
